Welcome to the MOI Neurosurgery Directorate, a center of excellence in providing advanced and comprehensive neurosurgical care. Our team of experienced and skilled neurosurgeons, state-of-the-art facilities, and patient-focused approach ensure that you receive the best possible care for your neurological needs. We provides outstanding care and treatment for patients with brain, spine, and peripheral nerve disease, disorders and injuries; advances neuroscience knowledge through basic and clinical research; and in collaboration with MUHAS and COSECSA we train students, residents and fellows.

The Directorate is led by Dr. Lemeri L. Mchome, Director of Neurosurgery (DNE), a highly experienced Brain and Spine neurosurgeon.
There are three departments within the Directorate and each led by a manager:

1. Dr. Nicephorus B. Rutabasibwa(MD, Mmed, MSc, FCS)Manager Department of General Neurosurgery and Neurocritical Care
2. Dr. Shabani H. Kimaro (MD, Phd, FCS) Manager Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
3. Dr. Alpha Kinghomella (MD, Mmed, MSc) Manager Department of Endoscopic, Endovascular, Functional and Steriotactic Neurosurgery.

Here are the specialized services we offer:

Neurotrauma Surgeries (Brain & Spine): Our department is equipped to handle emergency cases of head and spinal trauma 24/7. Our neurosurgeons are available around the clock to perform timely and life-saving interventions, including surgical procedures to address traumatic injuries to the brain and spine.
Degenerative Spine Surgeries (TLIF, MISS, PLIF, etc.): We specialize in a variety of minimally invasive and traditional surgical techniques to address degenerative spine conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and spinal instability. Our goal is to relieve pain and improve mobility.
Pediatric Neurosurgeries (Brain Tumors to Congenital Anomalies): Our team is highly experienced in performing a wide range of pediatric neurosurgical procedures, from delicate brain tumor removals to correcting congenital anomalies. We offer specialized care for our young patients to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV): We provide advanced endoscopic procedures like ETV to treat hydrocephalus without the need for shunt placement. This minimally invasive approach allows for effective cerebrospinal fluid diversion.
Cerebrovascular Surgeries (Aneurysm Surgeries): Our neurosurgeons excel in performing complex cerebrovascular surgeries, including aneurysm clipping and coiling, to address conditions affecting blood vessels in the brain. We prioritize precision and patient safety in these delicate procedures.
Skull Base Surgeries: Our expertise extends to intricate skull base surgeries to treat tumors and conditions that affect the base of the skull and the surrounding structures. Our surgical techniques aim to achieve maximum tumor removal while preserving neurological function.
Endoscopic Surgeries for Pituitary Tumors: We offer minimally invasive endoscopic procedures to remove pituitary tumors, resulting in shorter recovery times and reduced postoperative discomfort. Our approach ensures optimal outcomes for patients with hormonal imbalances.
Functional Surgeries (Epilepsy Surgeries): For patients with epilepsy that doesn’t respond to other treatments, we provide functional surgeries such as resective surgery. Our goal is to reduce or eliminate seizures and enhance your quality of life.
Chronic Pain Interventions (Blocks, Radiofrequency, Thermal Ablations): Our department specializes in managing chronic pain through a variety of interventions, including nerve blocks, radiofrequency, and thermal ablations techniques. We focus on personalized pain management plans to improve your well-being.
Endovascular Interventions (Cath Lab Procedures): Our skilled team performs endovascular procedures in our state-of-the-art Cath lab to treat various vascular conditions, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and stroke. These minimally invasive techniques often result in quicker recovery times.
At MOI Neurosurgery Department, your neurological health and well-being are our utmost priorities.
