Paediatric Orthopaedics and Trauma

Paediatric Orthopaedics and Trauma ["Comprehensive orthopaedic/trauma care for the Child"]

The paediatric orthopaedic firm is a specialized unit managing all orthopaedic and trauma problems facing children from birth up to 13 years.

The treatment of children with musculoskeletal problems is historically the root of orthopaedics as a specialty. The first specialists in this discipline devoted their efforts to the management of children with deformity. From this beginning orthopaedics rapidly developed into a specialty devoted to the musculoskeletal system for all age groups and all causes and disabilities.

Paediatric orthopaedics remains an integral component of the specialty, and those surgeons who devote their practice to it address all forms of musculoskeletal problems that relate to the growing child.  Approximately 10-15% of orthopaedic practice is devoted to problems in children.

Paediatric orthopaedics poses great challenges to any practicing orthopaedist. Because of the complex nature of musculoskeletal development, the surgeon must carefully consider the impact of the treatment offered, be it non-operative or operative.

Realising these challenges and the vast difference in the needs of the paediatric patient as opposed to the adult the Institute established a paediatric orthopaedic Unit in 2006. Since its establishment the unit has grown to become the most efficient service units of the Institute. The variety of activities in the unit has attracted interest amongst the qualifying Orthopaedic Specialists.

The research agenda of the Firm focuses on:

· The outcome of treatment of children with paediatric problems

· musculoskeletal malformations

· Musculoskeletal effects of metabolic disorders.

Formal programs address the clubfoot population, children with hip disorders, the outcomes of trauma and musculoskeletal oncology.

The Firm also serves as a Paediatric Orthopaedic training unit for the Muhimbili University to which the Institute is affiliated and other medical schools within Tanzania. Visiting elective period rotating students are frequently hosted.

The outpatient clinics invariably conducted by the Paediatric Orthopaedic team provide comprehensive clinical evaluation, radiology examinations and casting services. The team provides expertise in a wide variety of areas and closely collaborates with other members in the Institute to provide complete orthopaedic care for our paediatric patients. Cross-consultation with the Neurosurgical team, the adult Orthopaedic firms, the Orthotics and Prosthetics team, Physiotherapists and Anaesthesiologists ensures comprehensive care to the paediatric patient.

Treatment options in use include physiotherapy, casting, bracing, minimally invasive surgery, and major invasive surgery as may be indicated per individual patient.
